Nguyen Thi Lan Anh founded and is Director of the Action to the Community Development Center (ACDC), a Vietnamese NGO that works with people with disabilities. She was born with brittle bones and has been confined to a wheelchair all her life. Despite dreaming of becoming an English teacher, at university she realized that her calling was to help people with disabilities live in a barrier-free society. She set up ACDC in 2011 to assist other people with disabilities, providing free legal advice and working to empower young disabled people. ACDC runs a program called Cactus Blooming which focuses on reproductive and sexual healthcare and training for women with disabilities, and training for medical professionals. On receiving her award in 2013, Lan Anh said: “I was very moved when the HIWC informed me about this award. I simply did not think that one day the contributions and sacrifices of my friends, colleagues, beneficiaries and myself would be recognized.” On 28th November 2014, the National Assembly of Vietnam ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, with ACDC playing one of the most important advocacy roles.
