HIWC’s 2015 awardee was Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuong.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuong is the second of four children born to a family in Phu Xuyen District, Hanoi. Born with Brittle Bone disease, growing up has been a challenge for her. She is 80 cm tall and weighs only 22 kg. But Nguyen Thi Thu Thuong did not let her size or disability limit her activities or constrain her vision to help others. With the support of her parents, and using 10 years of her own savings, she opened Thuong Thuong Vocational Centre in 2014. Located in her home in Nam Phong Commune, the centre provides vocational training and acts as an employment introduction centre where disabled people can come together and learn how to make a living.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuong said:
“Building up Thuong Thuong Vocational Centre is extremely difficult for me. More than that, operating the centre to create jobs for the disabled is three times more difficult. We always think and worry about how we can sell products so we will increase revenue to pay for expenses and salaries”.
President Of HIWC Mrs Gill Lever said:
“Our members nominated some amazing women for our 2015 Vision Award – Ms. Nguyen Thu (SFORA), Ms. Nguyen Thi Hong (ACCV), Ms. Pham Thi Thanh Tam (REACH), Ms. Nguyen Thanh Tam (Viet Pride) and Ms. Tanya Pisarchuk (Time Club). It was a difficult decision, but we chose Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Thuong because she has shown great leadership and resourcefulness, a big heart and enormous courage. Her vision and calling to help others, despite her own difficulties, is remarkable. The HIWC applauds her, and all women like her, who have the dynamism and determination to realise a vision that helps and empowers others. We will take her as our role model as we strive to continue our own philanthropic activities.”
