Dr. Do Thuy Lan, director of Morning Star Center, has received the 2017 Vision Award for Inspiring Women.
Dr. Lan has dedicated her life to improving early detection and intervention for children with intellectual disabilities and autism in Vietnam. She was a leader in recognizing the need to integrate educational approaches with medical treatment for children with mental health problems. She was also instrumental in developing programs to help these children adapt to mainstream learning environments.
“Dr. Lan has made a tremendous impact on the lives of children and families facing autism and intellectual disabilities across Vietnam,” says Ha Angelet Phan, Chair of HIWC’s Community Aid Committee. “Her tireless work promoting early intervention, implementing innovative educational approaches, and advocating for children is an inspiration for us all. We are delighted to honor Dr. Lan with the 2017 Vision Award for Inspiring Women.”
After traveling abroad to study pediatric mental health, Dr. Lan established The Morning Star Center in Hanoi 22 years ago to provide high-quality services for children with intellectual disabilities and autism and to teach skills to prepare them to socially integrate into society. In recent years she has expanded the center’s reach by training teachers in mountainous provinces and encouraging the establishment of local programs to meet the needs of disabled children in rural areas.
“It is a great honor for me to receive such an amazing award,” says Dr. Lan. “I would like to express my great and sincere thanks to Hanoi International Women’s Club for recognizing and highly valuing my work. This award will be a great encouragement for me and my staff to continue our work and make a bigger effort to bring brighter future to more and more children with intellectual disabilities and autism in Vietnam.”
Sarah Allen, HIWC president says, “For almost 10 years the HIWC has presented a yearly award to a woman with vision, a woman who through her own efforts grew an idea into reality in Vietnam. It is important for us to understand in some way they have shaped history and changed lives. Female role models in today’s world are out there – They’re showing us boundaries do not exist and the reach of the modern woman is truly limitless.”
