Annual Charity Bazaar 2009

Festival Charity Bazaar 2009
A new place of venue with
34 participating countries, 23 charity organisations & 20 shops

The Hanoi International Women's Club (HIWC) organized the much anticipated 18th Festival Charity Bazaar on Sunday 29th November 2009. From its humble origins in 1986 when a group of about 30 women formed the Hanoi Diplomatic Ladies Group, HIWC has evolved into one of the biggest charitable women's clubs in South East Asia today.

"The largest and most colourful fundraising event of the year was held at My Dinh National Stadium Park on Sunday, November 29, from 10 am to 4 pm. The family favourite were the lively Kid's Corner with many activities suited to little people, and a stage with performances that showed the talent of both young and old. Visitors were invited to enjoy the cuisines of over 30 different countries.

This truly international bazaar were the place to look for diverse handicrafts from all over the world that are ideal as presents for the coming holidays. Additionally local vendors provide a variety of products often at discounted prices.

Thanks to the generous support of our donor community, embassies and both local and foreign businesses, the Bazaar held a silent auction. The gifts were displayed and visitors were able to sign-up higher bids on the items they wished to buy.  Auction items were many and diverse; from spa, dinner and vacation vouchers, to furniture.

All proceeds from the Bazaar goes directly to supporting the many charities in and around Hanoi. Here you can view a list of the wide variety of community aid projects HIWC has sponsored during the past years and see how the money earned at all fund-raising events is distributed and monitored.

Tickets were sold at 80.000 VND for adults and 50.000 VND for children. Bazaar tickets were available for sale in advance at all HIWC functions and selected retail outlets and could be bought at the entrance gates of the bazaar.

About the Bazaar

The Annual HIWC Festival Charity Bazaar is the largest fundraising event in Hanoi, and a great day of fun for the entire family.  Held each year at the end of November or beginning of December, the annual Bazaar attracts Vietnamese and expatriate residents alike.  The day itself is an opportunity to experience a blend of cultures through their cuisines, crafts and entertainments.  The event involves embassies and communities from a large number of countries, commercial enterprises, and charitable institutions, not to mention our corporate sponsors.  Over the yars the Bazaar has expanded from a few stalls to an all day festival featuring commercial goods and handicrafts for sale, entertainment for adults and children, charity information tables, games and raffles, and food and drink.  Relax with friends, meet some new ones and sample fabulous food and entertainment from around the world.  The Bazaar is a diverse, multi-cultural event that is indeed, unique to Hanoi.

Where the Bazaar Money Goes

All the funds raised at the Bazaar go to community aid projects.  Each year the community aid projects we support are many and varied.  The projects are approved and monitored by the Community Aid Committee (CAC), which adheres to strict guidelines to ensure that the money is well spent and spread through a range of sectors such as health, education and training for employment.  This involves working with hospitals, schools, orphanages and organizations such as the National Fund for Vietnamese Children and the Women's Union.  Health, education and social development projects are selected according to the following guidelines: 1) they would not normally be funded otherwise; 2) they have a humanitarian perspective; 3) they benefit women and children; and, 4) they create benefits for a broader community.

The Community Aid Committee members are all volunteers who pay their own costs for the screening and support work they do.  As a result, there are no administrative costs associated with the CAC and 100% of money raised by the Bazaar goes directly to the charities.

In 2008, the CAC spent $136,256 USD, directly affecting the lives of 1231 children and 1488 adults stricken by disease or poverty.  Using the funds raised by the Bazaar, CAC has achieved the following results in 2008:
